Day 18 ~ Death Becomes Us
So, I was born and raised Catholic, and these days my mother reminds me, Easter this sunday and all. Last night she politely called to tell me not to eat meat today, it is after all Good Friday. I reminded her I don’t eat meat any day of the week, considering I’m vegetarian. However she said today I should think about why I am not eating meat. What she meant was today I needed to remember Jesus died for our sins.
I of course fixated on the Death part and thought of Shivani Mehta’s fabulous prose poem The Dinner Party, found in her book, Useful Information for the Soon-to-be Beheaded. The first line is I dreamt I died in the middle of a dine party and no one stopped what they were doing. And came up with today’s prompt. When was the last time you died? of embarrassment? emotionally? here must be a thousand ways to die, at least on the inside, so that’s your prompt. Write about the last time you died.
